Will We Ever Get To See A Wedding Crashers Sequel?
Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn might get back into the wedding-crashing business.
Fifteen years after the comedy duo played John Beckwith and Jeremy Grey, respectively, director David Dobkin has revealed plenty of secrets about the original film to Entertainment Weekly. Dobkin has even confessed that we might still see a Wedding Crashers sequel someday.
"We talked about it for many, many years," Dobkin originally told EW when asked about a sequel. Nevertheless, his early stance wasn't encouraging. The director continued, "Vince, Owen, and I sat down at one point early on, when they were pressuring us to come up with something, and we had a lot of fun, but we realized we were remaking the same movie again and we really didn't want to do that."
However, a new interview has revealed that Dobkin and his stars are talking about a potential sequel to their raucous 2005 comedy. Here's what we know so far about a possible Wedding Crashers sequel.
Whether or not Wedding Crashers will get a sequel is still up in the air
While Dobkin told EW that he's "having conversations" with Vaughn and Wilson regarding an incomplete screenplay, a Wedding Crashers sequel hasn't fully taken shape yet: "I had an idea that really stuck in my mind. Ten or more years later, all of a sudden these guys are in their mid to late 40s and they end up single — what do they do? That's interesting to me, because I know guys in their mid to late 40s who have ended up single, whether it's out of marriages that didn't work out or they just didn't find anyone to marry, and it's a head trip for men, the idea of maybe I'm not going to be a dad, maybe I'm not going to be married. So it became a real cultural question and it yielded an interesting kind of center to the movie."
However, Dobkin was very clear about the fact that he's in no rush to make a sequel, invoking long-awaited follow ups like Blade Runner 2049, which arrived decades after their original film's release. As Dobkin put it, "We don't feel in a rush to make the movie, we never have. I believe in sequels that are new and appropriate, and I don't think there's a time limit of chasing what that is. There may be one day when we can finally get it all together. I can tell you that it's really fun to read those voices of these guys on the page again. There was a joy that I was surprised at when I read the first draft of what could have been, or maybe one day will be, this sequel. I do think audiences would love it."
Audiences have wondered about the Wedding Crashers sequel for years
Rumors have run rampant over the years about a possible Wedding Crashers sequel, with some of the original stars stoking the flames. In 2016, Isla Fisher, who played Gloria — Jeremy's unhinged yet deeply loving paramour-turned-wife — said that after running into Vaughn at a party, she was told a sequel was a go and that she was "really excited to see what happened to Gloria."
According to a post Dobkin made on Quora in 2014, he wanted to get Daniel Craig himself involved to poke fun at John and Jeremy and become the "next generation Terminator" of wedding crashing, outshining them easily, but that idea seems to have fallen by the wayside at this point. Furthermore, Fisher's comments seem out of place judging by Dobkin's latest comments; if both Wilson and Vaughn's characters are suddenly single, it's possible that neither Fisher nor Rachel McAdams, who recently reunited with Dobkin for 2020's Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga and played Wilson's Wedding Crashers love interest Claire, would appear in the film at all.
With all major filming currently on hold, the real fate of a Wedding Crashers sequel seems incredibly uncertain, but it seems like Dobkin may have something up his sleeve after all. If you want to revisit the first film in the meantime to celebrate its 15th anniversary, Wedding Crashers is available to rent or buy on all major streaming platforms.
